Pembrokeshire
Autumn 2005 Day 3
Day 1, Day 2, Day 4, Day 5
We had planned to cross to Ramsay Island today, but in spite of the blue skies the sea had a swell of up to 2 metres, and it was considered too dangerous for us to attempt boarding the boat. So we brought forward our Strumble Head area walk.
This photo was taken later in the day, but shows you where we started by the white buildings of the Youth Hostel at Pwll Deri. We then gradually climbed up the heights of Garn Fawr for a hazy view of the area.
Here we go. Our walk then took us about 3 miles on an inland route across the peninsula.
The wild heather was still blooming well.
Our first sight of Carregwasted Point, where we were to turn left and walk for about 6 miles along the rocky coast path.
Stunning coastline everywhere one looked.
The place goes down in history as the landing site of the last foreign invasion of British soil. The French landed here in 1797 and this stone was erected in 1897.
Tracey films the cameraman.
Brian meets up with another Ramblers' leader, here "sussing" out a holiday for his group.
Off we go, watching the ground carefully.
We take plenty of opportunities to stop and look at the scenery.
We spot a white seal pup on the beach. They change colour after three weeks, so this one was pretty young.
A young foal, still brown for camouflage. It will change to white as it gets older.
We spot a car ferry to Ireland leaving Fishguard to the north.
The lighthouse at Strumble Head. Here we have our second lunch break (the first was near Carregwasted Point), before setting off for the final three mile section of ups and downs.
The lighthouse is unmanned and is set on its own island.
A rushy section, the only one we saw on the coastal path.
One last sighting of the lighthouse behind us.
Some of the cliffs here really are rather ...
... precipitous, so don't go too near the edge!
A close of view of a toadstool - does anyone know what it is?
The weather has suited this walk, and we have seen the area at its best. Now a climb up to the cars and back for dinner. Will the boat trip be on tomorrow?
