Yorkshire Dales, Malham
Autumn 2006 Day 3
Day 1, Day 2, Day 4, Day 5
On Tuesday, the Settle and Carlisle railway was visited. Settle station was freshly painted and bedecked with
flowers. One party left the train at Ribblehead to climb Whernside, the highest point in Yorkshire, and one of the Three Peaks near the famous 24 arches of Ribblehead Viaduct. The rest continued their train journey to visit the attractive town of Appleby. The hill walkers were hard put to get back to Ribblehead station in time for the return train, enjoying the fine views rather too much, but some fine singing raised the pace sufficiently to arrive in the nick of time!
Ready for the off
.
Spot the climbers and the visitors to Appleby
.
The nine walkers leave the train at Ribblehead after just two stations
.
.
Ahead they spot the famous viaduct and behind it Whernside, the highest of the Three Peaks.
.
24 arches.
.
Say cheese, then off we go
.
Under the viaduct
.
.
A pretty level route at first over farmland
.
.
The viaduct receding
.
.
Tracey films a creepy-crawly before we start the ascent ahead
.
Half way up we stop for the view
.
And spot the coal trains. Each wagon carries 100 tonnes of coal we are informed
.
Jim rests his eyes, he assures us
.
Across the valley is another of the Three Peaks, Ingleborough
.
Up we go again
.
Are we nearly there?
.
 .
Yes, and here's the proof we made it
.
Very windy up here, but we sit in the thoughtfully provided shelter
.
And consume our lunch
.
Over the fence we look in vain for the Lake District, which is lost in rain cloud, but we can make out the
"Sleeping Elephants" as Wainright called the Howgill Fells. We receive no rain in Yorkshire!
.
Down we go
.
Past waterfalls
.
An aquaduct
.
And Blea Moor tunnel - gosh is that the time? Will we make the 15:23?
.
A jolly sing song or 10 ensures we up the pace
.
Repassing the viaduct with just 5 minutes to go before the train is due! (to be continued)
.
Meanwhile, the others are travelling on to Appleby
.
Is this it? Yes
.
First job is to sample the coffee in The Bay Tree overlooking the river Eden
.
We spend a relaxing day
.
Sightseeing
.
Visiting the Almshouses

Hoping to see Red Squirrels as promised on the sign

We make our way back to the station
.
MEANWHILE ... The climbers have dashed onto the platform at Ribblehead, and discovered that (fortunately)
the train is 5 minutes late!
.
We clamber on board and who should we see
.
But Patrick, recording the event for the DVD!

All are reunited
