Yorkshire Dales, Malham
Autumn 2006 Day 1
Day 2, Day 3, Day 4, Day 5
Twenty one South Cotswold Ramblers arrived at Malham village on 24th September 2006, expressing relief at having left the busy M6. Led by Mike and Heather, the group was soon following the Pennine Way, easing stiff joints and admiring the view of Malham which was made famous by the popular author, Bill Bryson.
Assembling in Miresfield Farm car park, ready to walk from the door
.
.
Obviously the Pennine Way has much traffic, with double gates
.
To enable swift passage of large parties
.
.
But this newer one gave people a chance to chat
.
Before they strode off without the photographer
.
.
Who soon caught up to discover Jim kindly helping people across the interesting stiles
.
.
We passed Hanlith Hall
.
.
And strolled across the valley towards Kirby Malham Church
.
And other local attractions
.
First Linda is treated to a session in the stocks
.
Whilst Brian contemplates the box pews, the unusual niches in the columns (which used to contain statues of the saints) and times gone by
.
We start the climb up to the view made famous by Bill Bryson when he lived in the village
.
Is this the one, asks Bruno
.
Yes, that's the one, with Malham Cove a mile away shining in the afternoon sunlight, and the stone walls climbing up impossible slopes
.
Lovely late afternoon sunshine as we descend to the village
.
Passing through a variety of stiles and back to a hot shower before
.
Enjoying our first evening meal at the Lister Arms - highly recommended!
