southcotswoldramblers.org.uk Day 3 South Purbeck Coast easier walk Wednesday 13 May 2015 |
Holiday Photos Day 1 Day 2 > Day 3 easier < Day 3 harder Day 3 harder v2 Day 4 Day 5 |
|
| Joy shows us our planned route from Langton Matravers | |
| We walk towards the ridge we traversed yesterday | |
| Glancing over to Corfe Castle | |
| And discover a quarr shed from a small old local quarry, one of many in the area, where local stone was shaped | |
| An original donkey driven capstan and chain to raise the quarried stone | |
| And the shaft from where it was hauled up from the mine | |
| National Trust information boards tell us how Purbeck Marble was used in many places, including Westminster Abbey | |
| Tools used by stone masons | |
| And you all know what this picture portrays if you have been paying attention | |
| We have walked from Norman's Quarry, past Spyway Barn, to reach Dancing Ledge | |
| Time for coffee | |
| Before we descend | |
| Shall we go down there? | |
| A lot more steps down to Dancing Ledge | |
| We keep up and get a good view of the caves | |
| We spot milkwort | |
| And what we thought was a bee orchid, but in fact it was a nationally rare early spider orchid (thanks Angela). This grows well on Dorset's chalk cliffs, read more HERE and scroll down. | |
| We reach Anvil Point and the lighthouse | |
| Then pass Tilly Whim caves | |
| What amazing work to create these mines without power tools! | |
| Thanks to Joy for making this walk so fascinating | |
| A fishing boat sails by | |
| Quite a climb up | |
| We look back | |
| Eventually reaching the Globe where we get a cup of tea from Durlston Castle | |
| Before walking through the woods | |
| Towards Swanage |
