Spring 2007 Day 3

Day 1, Day 2, Day 4
The day started with a short car ride to Dittisham where we caught the ferry across to the other side. We then followed the Dart Trail through the Greenway Estate (once owned by Agatha Christie) down to Kingswear where we caught the higher ferry to Dartmouth. Plans for the afternoon walk were abandoned as we were running late and we were left with some free time to have lunch and a look around Dartmouth. Some of us walked out to Dartmouth Castle. A boat then collected us to take us from Dartmouth back up the river to Dittisham.
.
Our day starts with a short car journey to Dittisham where we gather in the car park
.
Before walking round to the ferry
.
Where Brian rings the bell to summon the ferry from the other side.
.
It soon arrives and the first group prepares to climb aboard
.
It takes three trips to carry us over. This one looks a bit low in the water
.
Once over we have chance to examine this thatched cottage - Agatha Christie used to write her books here
.
The final group disembarks
.
And we set off up the hill towards the Greenway Estate - once the home of Agatha Christie.

.
Following the Dart Trail through the Greenway Estate we climb steeply uphill
.
Now looking down on Dartmouth
.
Another view as a kind gentleman holds the gate open
.
And we pause
. .
To count the number of boats in the Estuary
.
We continue along the Dart Valley Trail
.
The sun starting to come out
.
Then descend into the valley
.
Some needing a helping hand on the slippery slope
.
Then a break for coffee etc.
.
Our Leader demonstrates how to undress a lady
.
While others tuck into their emergency rations
.
Our path continues downhill
.
With a pause for people to catch up
.
Before boarding the higher ferry to take us across to Dartmouth
.
Looking back we see yesterday's train behind the slipway
.
And from Dartmouth we look across to Kingswear
.
We walk out to the Castle passing Warfleet Cove, once a busy trading quay
.
Inside the church of St Petrox at Dartmouth Castle
.
Then looking out over the ramparts
.
On the way back to the town we see the two lower ferries passing in mid stream
.
No trip to the seaside would be complete without a picture of a seagull
.
Back in Dartmouth we stop at Bayards Cove, very popular with film makers
.
Then sit and wait for the boat to take us back to Dittisham
.
An old sailing barge passes by - now a sail training vessel
.
But eventually we board our boat - every picture tells a story
.
And sail back up the river
.
Passing boats
.
Of all shapes and sizes
.
Some of us admire the riverside views, while some are busy talking
.
As we pass the Greenway Viaduct
.
And then the Greenway Boathouse before reaching Dittisham and the cars to take us back to our hotel
.
All the above photos and captions thanks to Richard.
