Yorkshire Dales, Malham
Autumn 2006 Day 4
Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 5
Wednesday's walk led upwards between stone walls to Weets Cross and Calton Moor. A fine raised path had been constructed to keep the boots clear of marshy ground. A highlight of the day was the visit to a splendid farm shop and cafe at Airton.
Along the River Aire for a short way
.
We now turn away from the river past a field barn
.
And near woods
.
.
This is the life
.
Janet's Foss woods belongs to the National Trust
.
.
Where there is a peculiar custom of driving coins into tree stumps
.
Is Linda inserting one or trying to remove it?
.
.
The gorge leads to
.
.
The foss (or waterfall)
.
.
Up the rocky path for a better view
.
A bit cold for a swim, and not advised
.
A dipper (right) perched on the tufa formed at the waterfall
.
We emerge onto the road near Goredale Scar (we are saving this up for the last day)
.
Up the hill we go for about a mile
.
With ever improving views
.
Don't do it, Brian!
.
Not far to Weets Top now
.
But very draughty, so much so we all put the layers on
.
No doubt about where to go, a causeway having been constructed across the soggy Calton Moor
.
We meet up with
.
Two men and their dog, doing the walk in the opposite direction
.
Patrick films the group, hoping for some drama at the water, but no such luck
.
The sun comes out
.
Yes, it's definitely shining
.
But soon disappears again, never to return this day. We descend to the shelter of the valley where we eat a smallish lunch
.
Having travelled quite a way to Calton village
.
Nosey ramblers
.
Discovering an interesting cottage
.
Down to the river bank at Airton
.
Passing a converted mill
.
Over the bridge to part two of our lunch at Townend Farm ...

Brian is one of the first to get served with a cream tea
.
Others admire the interesting selection of beers
.
 .
After this Maurice and Kathy leave us for a spot of ornithology
.
Whilst the rest of us head upstream towards Malham
.
Guess what, we meet two men and a dog again, still going in the opposite direction!
.
Hanlith Hall
.
Mature trees by the river
.
We cross to the left bank
.
And catch a distant view of the house that Bill Bryson used to live in
.
An old mill leat is a fine nature reserve now
.
Margaret and John enjoy a quick break
.
Back across the last field
.
Where Jim is on gate duty
.
Thank you my man. In the distance is the creeper covered Buck Inn, where in the evening ...
.
We assemble for our final dinner
.
Building up our appetite
.
Tracey waiting patiently
.
As are we all
.
Later, the sweet is much enjoyed
.
By one and all
.
A wonderful meal - in fact we have had excellent meals on this holiday at all three local hostelries
.
