Isle of Wight
Autumn 2007 Day 2
Day 1, Day 3, Day 4, Day 5
The coach drops us off in the village of Whitwell, and Jill our leader from Step-by-Step Holidays starts the 9.5 mile walk on a brilliant day
.
.
Off the road Jill shows her giant map case, and tells us about the origin of the village name
.
We head off up to the ridge
.
And Stenbury Down
.
* Where we pause at the obelisk
.
Then descend again
.
Interesting shadows from the bright light
.
Steady as we go
.
Jill waits until we are all down
.
Before she tells us of the lady who had an accident here! We all breathe a sigh of relief. She also points out a "hare-hole" where game hares were allowed access through the wall which surrounds the hill
..
* We arrive at the grand gate to Appledurcombe
.
* Where Jill relates the downfall of the family
.
The grand house is just a restored facade
.
After an excellent lunch in the Four Seasons in Wroxall, we resume our walk
.
Along the course of the old railway, where we meet the local law keeper
.
* The afternoon is devoted to animals - first we pass the donkey sanctuary
.
* Where the resident cat tries to make friends
.
Goats are next on the menu
.
Then we meet a couple of characters out rabbiting with their ferrets
.
Bruno and Anne seem to be enjoying the experience
.
We pass a fairly new lake with interesting sculptures on the far bank
.
At the observatory Jill tells us that conditions here are excellent with the dark skies in this part of the island
.
We wend our way in the late afternoon sun
.
To Newchurch, where the coach awaits to return us to Shanklin. After a good evening meal a lot of us visit the Shanklin Theatre to see the musical Oliver.
