Ocean Rail Bridge installation now planned for December 2021

As you may know Network Rail and their contractors Alun Griffiths Construction Ltd have been working hard towards a fixed date for the replacement of the Ocean Rail Bridge in Stonehouse. We heard today that this programme has been re-programmed until Winter 2021. We hope that this message from Dave Marshall at Stroud District Council will offer some clarification.

Message from Dave Marshall, Stroud District Council, Canal Manager:

Ocean railway bridge replacement – change of programme

Planned railway bridge replacement over the canal at Stonehouse Ocean is now expected to take place between Christmas and New Year 2021.

The results of detailed geological investigations mean the bridge cannot be installed during the May Bank Holiday weekend as expected. They show that the bridge requires deeper foundations than originally planned. Identifying the issue at this stage provides the opportunity to re-plan the work, design the best solution for the foundations and leaves the canal water levels unaltered through the bird-nesting season and the summer months.

Network Rail is replacing the rail bridge on behalf of the Cotswold Canals Connected Project, as part of the canal restoration between the Ocean and Saul Junction. The new dates may still be subject to change.
