Whitby and the North York Moors
Spring 2004 Day 1
Day 2, Day 3, Day 4, Day 5
Brian led a party of 29 walkers on a walking holiday in this lovely area in May 2004.
Arriving after a long journey, some of us did a "stroll" around Whitby. Here we catch our first glimpse of the Abbey ruins from the other side of town.
We were not the only arrival that day - the Endeavour, a replica of Captain Cook's ship, had just docked.
.
The "stroll" continued to the end of the harbour breakwater ...
.
... then up again ...
... then up the 199 steps to the parish church ...
.
... with the amazingly weathered tombstones. Nearby you can see the red roofed YHA hostel and of course the abbey ruins.
.
We did another half mile to see the best view of the ruins ...
.
... before returning to the hotel. Our stroll had measured over four miles!
