There's a new programme starting on BBC4 on Wednesday at 9pm, that might be of interest to us Ramblers. It's a comedy starring Ruth Jones among others. === WALKS SWAPPED BE CAREFUL If you looked at our walks programme early, when it was just on Walks Finder for testing, you may still be thinking Jacqui's walk is on 31 July - BUT IT IS ON 21 August. It was swapped over in late June before issuing the 4 page version for printing, which is correct, as is the website now. === ABERYSTWYTH HOLIDAY 12-16 SEPT NEW Due to a cancellation there is now a double room available on the Aberystwyth Holiday. If anybody is interested please phone Richard on 01453 762373. === LEADERS, PLEASE OFFER A DATE Olivia and John G look forward to your calls Click here to see dates available === WALK DETAILS Please CLICK HERE to fill in your walk details to save lots of work === AMAZING 30% OFF HF HOLIDAYS HF Holidays have been in touch with our Group as good customers of theirs, and are offering a reduction of 30% on ANY of their UK holidays departing before 31 October 2010. Julia comments: My ambition with the Ramblers over the coming year is simple: get Britain on its feet. The country is stuffed with beautiful walks and a 130,000 mile footpath network I want everyone to get out there and enjoy it! === MORE NEWS ABOUT LINDA BOLTON NEW Members who knew walker Linda Bolton before she moved to Harrogate, Yorkshire, and are aware that she has been ill will be pleased to hear that she has some good news to share this time. Pam Paradise has passed another message on. Please send Mike a message on the Contact Us page or email him if you wish to know more details. Or contact Pam direct. Please let non-computing members know too. Thank you. ![]() === RAMBLERS VOLUNTEER WEBSITE Hope everybody has read "Tom's Blog" for April on the volunteer website (3rd item in particular). Well done to all involved. Richard === DO YOU WALK ON AND NEAR ROBINSWOOD HILL AND BROOKTHORPE? Have you heard about the plans to build a MSA (Motorway Service Area) there, even though a similar one was turned down in 1994? We walk as a Group in the area regularly and last year we enjoyed the Wysis Way through there. The Ramblers are objecting on countryside protection grounds, light and noise pollution and are questionning whether an MSA is really needed at all. Stroud DC planners will decide in June, taking into account people's views. Already over 800 comments have been made. See the plans and scroll down to read some (or all if you have a few days!) HERE and if you are concerned consider adding your voice (reference S.09/2292/FUL). === MEDICAL ALERT CARD + ACTION! Concern has always been expressed about the possibility of someone being taken ill on a Group walk and no information being available of medical conditions or emergency contacts. Gloucester Group has come up with the idea of medical cards being supplied to all members, which they can fill in and carry with them inside their rucksacks near the top. Mike has refined the idea and has come up with a card and a plastic wallet, which he will be making available to all members on led group walks. I may have some too if he is not there. The cards are free and the protective wallets, if needed, cost 30p. If you would like one or both sent by post, please send a SAE to Mike as detailed in the February 2010 Newsletter with an extra unused 2nd class stamp as payment if you want a plastic wallet. You can also print out your own card(s). Click here
........![]() Carrying a card will be entirely voluntary; making things compulsory with ramblers never seems to work, but the more you think about it the better the idea becomes. In fact I cant think why we didnt introduce these cards years ago! Richard Davies, Group Chairman === NEW AREA WEBSITE OPEN Have you visited the new Gloucestershire Area Ramblers website yet? There's lots of good stuff. Try the WALKS page where you will find all the walks of all the Gloucestershire Groups, and a way to download GRWalks there and then (second item down). It even gets a mention on the Ramblers' volunteer page on the main website. === KISSING GATE OPENING WALK We're in the News (and Journal) === ANY MISSING LINKS? HELP NEEDED The website is 10 years old this year would you believe! Like Topsy, it just grew, rather messily in the coding underneath, but it worked! I have been doing some tidying up recently now that I understand what I am doing a bit more, but I might have caused the odd link to stop working. So I would be grateful if you could tell me if you discover any problem with a link. Thanks, Mike. === RED KITES NEXT SEPTEMBER NEWS Richard and Di have sorted out two great sounding walks for the first and last days of their Aberystwyth walking holiday next September. Read the details, and hurry, there may be room for a few more! News of the walks (and kites) here Original newsletter here See page 3 === FAIRGAME THEATRE The above organisation has contacted us regarding a project which they are proposing in connection with Gloucestershires Cultural Olympiad programme. It is entitled As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning and involves a series of guided walks around the county using the landscape and physicality of walking to provide the catalyst for creative, community based activities. Each walk will lead by a project manager, with a visual artist and creative writer working with them in each area. While we did not feel that this was something we could realistically get involved with as a Group, there may be some members who might be intrigued. If anybody is interested the group can be contacted at the Everyman Theatre at Cheltenham. Their website is www.fairgametheatre.com, telephone 01242 695570. In addition there may be more news posted here in due course. === BATON WALK Joe's Hill walk was our Baton Walk, part of Ramblers 75th Anniversary celebrations. If you want to find out what this is all about visit the microsite === CHRISTMAS LUNCH RECENT The Christmas Lunch was held on the 19th December at Minchinhampton Golf Club. Nearly forty members attended and all agreed that the food and service were excellent. We sat down to a choice of turkey, beef or salmon for our main course preceded and followed by a good choice of starters and sweets. Thanks are due to John and Margaret McArdell for organising the event and to the Golf Club for the use of their restaurant and for providing such a splendid meal. CLICK HERE for pictures from Mia. === NEWLY ADDED HISTORICAL PHOTOS - MORE thanks again to Margaret McArdell. She has now sent holiday photos from 1997 and 1998 - didn't we look young? And some more in our area. === MAP READING PRACTICAL INSTRUCTION CURRENT OFFER Bernard, our Group Secretary, writes, "Would you like to look at footpaths on the map and then work out a route across fields and woods? Then go and walk that route using the map and a compass. "Well you can if you come with me, I will show you how to do this. I am by no means an expert but I can do the above as that is the way I plan all my walks. "Just contact me and we can plan a route through unknown countryside within our area in Gloucestershire. and then we can walk it together. (Then if you wish you could lead it for the Group but only if you want to)." Bernard Smith 01453 884013 or e-mail === READ ABOUT OUR GROUP AGM RECENT Brian Kirkman stood down as Group Chairman after three years and in his place Richard Davis was elected. If all you know is "it was a pink flower" you can search under "pink"! Have a look, it's addictive. === walk - THE MAGAZINE OF THE RAMBLERS - WEBSITE This is updated daily, and is a good source of interesting reading === STROKE RECOGNITION Remind yourself how to spot a possible stroke === MONEY OFF NEWS- click here for all the offers we know of to members of the Ramblers === SMALL ADS - Contact us with your wording to sell that clothing or boots!
