HELP NEEDED The website is 10 years old this year would you believe! Like Topsy, it just grew, rather messily in the coding underneath, but it worked! I have been doing some tidying up recently now that I understand what I am doing a bit more, but I might have caused the odd link to stop working. So I would be grateful if you could tell me if you discover any problem with a link. Thanks, Mike. === RED KITES NEXT SEPTEMBER NEWS Richard and Di have sorted out two great sounding walks for the first and last days of their Aberystwyth walking holiday next September. Read the details, and hurry, there may be room for a few more! News of the walks (and kites) here Original newsletter here See page 3 === 11 MILES OF MADNESS - Sponsored Walk The Door Youth Project is looking for walkers... Perhaps you know friends of relatives who might be interested. Sunday, June 13, 2010 Time: 9:00am - 5:30pm Download an entry form here: Entry_form_2010 Think of the great British Summer and what springs to mind? Barbeques, Ice Cream, Beer Gardens, Frolics and Fetes. Combine all of these things with an 11 mile sponsored walk and you have.... 11 MILES OF MADNESS 2010 The Door Youth Project created this event in 2009 to raise funds for the PUSH The Door Appeal, which will enable expansion of the vitally important support work for young people in the Stroud District. It is planned for this event to become a major annual event in the walking calendar and a key fundraising activity of The Door Youth Project. NEW THIS YEAR... We would like to give you some incentive and a chance to win some prizes: > So dont walk alone, gather your friends, relatives, work colleagues and win the prize for organising and entering the biggest team (£125 worth of gift vouchers). > The individual person collecting the most sponsor money and handing it in by the deadline date will also win a prize of (£125 worth of gift vouchers). ONE REASON TO TAKE PART... Ask a young person what they need in life and all of them would say that they need to be loved, valued and taken seriously. The majority of young people will say that they just want someone to listen to them. With your help The Door will be able to help meet some of these needs. Together we will make a huge difference. === MEDICAL ALERT CARD + NEW Concern has always been expressed about the possibility of someone being taken ill on a Group walk and no information being available of medical conditions or emergency contacts. Gloucester Group has come up with the idea of medical cards being supplied to all members, which they can fill in and carry with them inside their rucksacks near the top. Mike has refined the idea and has come up with a card and a plastic wallet, which he will be making available to all members on led group walks. I may have some too if he is not there. The cards are free and the protective wallets, if needed, cost 30p. If you would like one or both sent by post, please send a SAE to Mike as detailed in the February 2010 Newsletter with an extra unused 2nd class stamp as payment if you want a plastic wallet. You can also print out your own card(s) from a link here INSIDE OUTSIDE Carrying a card will be entirely voluntary; making things compulsory with ramblers never seems to work, but the more you think about it the better the idea becomes. In fact I cant think why we didnt introduce these cards years ago! Richard Davies, Group Chairman === LEADERS YOU'VE GUESSED IT - WE NEED MORE! All walks are now published and a big thank you to all the leaders of 47 walks for March to June! Karen and Jacqui look forward to your calls offering dates from July to October by the end of March. See what's left (!) on the Walks Leaders page here === MEMORY MAP NEW Bruno has received a Christmas Pressie of Memory Map for his computer. Are there any other users of this system he can swap notes with? === NEWS ABOUT LINDA BOLTON Members who knew walker Linda Bolton before she moved to Harrogate, Yorkshire will be upset to hear that she is seriously ill in hospital in Leeds. Pam Paradise has passed a message on to me. Please send Mike a message on the Contact Us page if you wish to know more details. Please let non-computing members know too. Thank you. ![]() === FAIRGAME THEATRE The above organisation has contacted us regarding a project which they are proposing in connection with Gloucestershires Cultural Olympiad programme. It is entitled As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning and involves a series of guided walks around the county using the landscape and physicality of walking to provide the catalyst for creative, community based activities. Each walk will lead by a project manager, with a visual artist and creative writer working with them in each area. While we did not feel that this was something we could realistically get involved with as a Group, there may be some members who might be intrigued. If anybody is interested the group can be contacted at the Everyman Theatre at Cheltenham. Their website is www.fairgametheatre.com, telephone 01242 695570. In addition there may be more news posted here in due course. === BATON WALK Joe's Hill walk was our Baton Walk, part of Ramblers 75th Anniversary celebrations. If you want to find out what this is all about visit the microsite === CHRISTMAS LUNCH RECENT The Christmas Lunch was held on the 19th December at Minchinhampton Golf Club. Nearly forty members attended and all agreed that the food and service were excellent. We sat down to a choice of turkey, beef or salmon for our main course preceded and followed by a good choice of starters and sweets. Thanks are due to John and Margaret McArdell for organising the event and to the Golf Club for the use of their restaurant and for providing such a splendid meal. CLICK HERE for pictures from Mia. === NEWLY ADDED HISTORICAL PHOTOS - MORE thanks again to Margaret McArdell. She has now sent holiday photos from 1997 and 1998 - didn't we look young? And some more in our area. === MAP READING PRACTICAL INSTRUCTION CURRENT OFFER Bernard, our Group Secretary, writes, "Would you like to look at footpaths on the map and then work out a route across fields and woods? Then go and walk that route using the map and a compass. "Well you can if you come with me, I will show you how to do this. I am by no means an expert but I can do the above as that is the way I plan all my walks. "Just contact me and we can plan a route through unknown countryside within our area in Gloucestershire. and then we can walk it together. (Then if you wish you could lead it for the Group but only if you want to)." Once a month on Saturdays 13 March, 10 April, 8 May and 5 June we are hoping to put on a choice of two walks (subject to finding the staff!) 1. A FOUR + FOUR WALK (A medium 8 mile walk with a short 4 mile option) The first 4 miles is aimed at everyone, but particularly as a welcome to those fairly new to walking, or members finding a longer walk too much. Lunch will probably be after 5 or 6 miles and the walk will finish early to mid-afternoon. Walks might be a figure of eight, or a route with a possible early return by bus. 2. A LONGER FASTER (12+ miles) WALK - Intended for fit, more experienced members, or those wishing to improve their level of fitness. If you are uncertain about your ability to keep up, it would be wise to ask the leader before the day. ALL OTHER WEEKENDS will have one walk as previously. LEADERS - Please click HERE to see which dates are still available Mike - Walks Programme Co-ordinator === EVENING WALKS NEXT SUMMER UPDATED Starting at the end of April, we are putting on some shortish (3-4 mile) Thursday evening walks starting at 6:30pm, starting from or near to a pub where a drink might be an option afterwards. Please let Mike know if you can recommend a really good starting point and/or pub for a sunny summer's evening. We shall soon be needing leaders for July and August. Leaders, please contact Mike with your offers. You will soon be able to see available dates (July to October) by clicking here. === LEADERS - walk details ready? Please CLICK HERE to fill in your walk details to save us lots of work === ABERYSTWYTH HOLIDAY SEPTEMBER 2010 If there is anybody else who wishes to come on what promises to be a really good holiday please contact Richard Davis so that he can check availability. === GREAT WEBSITE TO IDENTIFY WILD FLOWERS RECENT Pam reports that there is a great website www.floralimages.co.uk which you can use to identify wild flowers, funghi etc. They are not trying to sell you anything and the photography is superb. If all you know is "it was a pink flower" you can search under "pink"! Have a look, it's addictive. === walk - THE MAGAZINE OF THE RAMBLERS - WEBSITE This is updated daily, and is a good source of interesting reading === STROKE RECOGNITION Remind yourself how to spot a possible stroke === MONEY OFF NEWS- click here for all the offers we know of to members of the Ramblers === SMALL ADS - Contact us with your wording to sell that clothing or boots!
