Over 1 million links! Berkeley How can Berkeley best be described? Not only is it a pretty little town, set in the middle of one of the most attractive parts of England, but everywhere you go in the town, you stumble over little bits of English history. Whitcliff Deer Park Work will continue to preserve the historic landscape and its archaeological features - such as the ancient boundary wall and ponds - as well as maintaining wildlife habitats and public rights of way. Conifer trees will be replaced with native broadleafs such as oak, to help restore the park's medieval character. | Berkeley
is historically an old market town with some marine history. The
castle traces to before the civil war and has some gruesome tales.
In High Street a look at the windows will show
how many of the buildings changed use from shops, pubs and workshops.
The main sites, castle, butterfly collection, Jenner Museum and church
deserve a longer visit. The castle is still home to the Berkeley family,
who run the large estate. Afer the town we set out on a 7 mile walk which is generally level. The route goes up by the Little River Avon, all the way to Stone, before crossing pasture land back to the Deer Park. If you are quiet you will see much wildlife, including hares and all kinds of birds. There is one short steep climb up to Whitcliff Deer Park, where there are extensive views over the Severn and the Cotswolds. There are at least two breeds of deer in the park.
