southcotswoldramblers.org.uk/books Walk 5 Bidfield Farm, Sheepscombe, Ebworth Estate and Whiteway |
|
| This 5
mile walk goes downhill, sometimes fairly steeply through woods and
fields to visit the fascinating village of Sheepscombe. A short uphill section takes you to a vantage point overlooking the village, before descending to Far End and into National Trust woodland of high nature conservation value. The bridleway ascends gently most of the way, and shortly before leaving the Ebworth Estate climbs more sharply to reach Fostons Ash, up on the plateau with wide views. Later the route skirts the Whiteway Colony, founded in 1898 by a Tolstoyan anarchist group, and which developed into a patchwork of smallholdings with people living in a variety of homemade sheds, huts, houses and railway carriages etc. In 1924 a colony hall was erected to house social activities and a school house and in 1969 the colony swimming pool was opened. They are the longest surviving secular community in the country.
