Hill & Ham Winter Warmer

Sat 21 February 2009

.
.
Joe surveys his customers for his annual pilgrimage from Hill
.
.
And we set off down the road in an unruly bunch
.
.
Soon organising ourselves into a more orderly column
.
.
Pausing for a break when we reach the Severn
.
.
Then making our way along its grassy banks
.
.
Spotting an aid to navigation
.
.
A short wait for stragglers
.
.
Gives us chance to look across the river
.
.
Stretching upstream to Sharpness
.
.
And down to the estuary
.
.
We gather outside the Nuclear Power Station
.
.
Stopping to examine the old mill - powered originally by trapping tidal waters
.
.
Then head towards Berkeley
.
.
Passing this proud mother and baby
.
.
Can spring be far away?
.
.
Lunch is taken on Ham village green
.
.
And our afternoon walk begins
.
.
Through a muddy gateway
.
.
And into the deer park
.
.
Following the avenue of oak trees
.
.
We pause to get together and proceed quietly
.
.
To see the deer
.
.
Plenty of them
.
.
Finally climbing out over a deer proof stile
.
.
Our path takes us down into the valley
.
.
Then up to the haunted house - at least Joe says it is
.
.
And he stops to show us where we are
.
.
As we look out over the farm buildings towards the distant Cotswolds
.
.
We turn our back on the spooky house, thankful to be past it
.
.

Bernard stops to fix on a way mark to help future ramblers to make their escape
.
.
One look back
.
.
Then a final stile takes us on to a muddy track which takes us back to the cars
.
.
.
Photos and captions from Richard and a few from Mike

top As you can see, we thoroughly enjoy getting to know the South Cotswolds. We try to keep fit and succeed in having a good old chat. If you are interested in coming with us, see our walks programme and ring the leader if you have any questions about a particular walk. After two or three walks we hope you will then want to join the group as part of the national Ramblers' Association.
