Chalford Hill and Bisley

Sat 31 January 2009

.
Chalford Sports & Social Club CP. A cold January day. A determined bunch of ramblers stride over
.
.
To where Richard is ready to take them for a walk
.
.
Heading down through France Lynch and up to Avenis Green
.
.
Before following the path downhill
.
.
Through a smart green kissing gate
.
.
And into the woods
.
.
Out the other side through the unpainted version of the kissing gate
.
.
And down to Valley Corner with Brunel's viaduct in the background
.
.
We head along the canal
.
.
Past the old lock keeper's cottage
.
.
Pausing for a breath
.
.
Before we begin our climb uphill - Frampton Mansell behind us
.
.
We cross a stream
.
.
And are greeted at the top by this friendly chap
.
.
And all his friendly friends who gather round those who choose to have coffee in their field
.
.
The rest of us relax on a grassy bank out of harm's way
.
.
Our route takes us out through Waterlane
.
.
Then through the woods
.
.
And down into Battlescombe
.
.
Where we walk up the valley
.
.
Jumping a stream. Left foot forward. Walking pole flapping in the air
.
.
Or right foot forward. Walking pole planted in the stream for support
.
.
A short climb brings us to a track leading to Bisley where lunch is to be taken
.
.
But on this walk we go the long way round heading in the opposite direction down into the valley
.
.
Then back up again
.
.
Resting at the top
.
.
Before lunch at the cricket ground - a rose on the end of three thorns?
.
.

Time for a quick half
.
.
Then on our way under the suspicious gaze of the Bisley cat
.
.
Across the fields - another rambling group heading in the opposite direction
.
.
A lesson in corner cutting as the footpath turns back on itself
.
.
To head through a farm
.
.
And we make our way
.
.
Along the side of the Toadsmoor Valley
.
.
To Eastcombe where we stop to look across the village
.
.
And pause for a look at Eastcombe football team before we head for home
.
.
As promised, the statistics of the walk with the canal at the 2 mile marker, lunch after 7 miles and an easy afternoon!
Thank you Richard, much enjoyed, Mike

top As you can see, we thoroughly enjoy getting to know the South Cotswolds. We try to keep fit and succeed in having a good old chat. If you are interested in coming with us, see our walks programme and ring the leader if you have any questions about a particular walk. After two or three walks we hope you will then want to join the group as part of the national Ramblers' Association.
