southcotswoldramblers.org.uk Amberley, Dunkirk and Woodchester Sat 27 December 2008 . |
| A
good coating of frost on the road as Tim greets us at the reservoir on
the Common . . |
| And
we head into Amberley . . |
| Down
through the woods . . |
| Tim
pauses at the bottom of Whipps Lane . . |
| To
explain that the name comes from hazel wood grown nearby . . |
| We
head on downhill with Dunkirk Manor behind us . . |
| At
the entrance to Dunkirk Mill Tim and Di recall the Days when their
auntie lived in the house behind . . |
| We
carry on up the valley . . |
| To
Windsoredge . . |
| Where
we look across South Woodchester to Rodborough . . |
| As
we go down into the valley frost still lingers . . |
| Then
its up the other side . . |
| Where
Tim pauses to expound his rather dubious theory that the local catholic
community results from the old Roman one . . |
| We
now drop down towards the priory . . |
| Its
church still bathed in sunlight . . |
| We
cross the busy A46 . . |
| And
once again we go under the cycle track . . |
| Then
follow it towards Stroud . . |
| Graffiti
under a bridge . . |
| Coffee
and a talk from Tim on the Railway . . |
| As
we head back up the hill Tim holds down an electric wire . . |
| We
climb up towards Manor Woods . . |
| Looking
across to Rodborough Common . . |
| With
North Woodchester behind us . . |
| We
enter the woods . . |
| And
look back at our climb . . |
| Eventually
coming out onto the Common . . |
| And
heading up through Amberley . . |
| To
the cars . . |
| Beats
walking! . . |

| As you can see, we thoroughly enjoy getting to know the South Cotswolds. We try to keep fit and succeed in having a good old chat. If you are interested in coming with us, see our walks programme and ring the leader if you have any questions about a particular walk. After two or three walks we hope you will then want to join the group as part of the national Ramblers' Association. | |||
