Hillesley and Hawkesbury

Sat 5 April 2008

.
Jacqui leads us off from Hillesley towards the hills
.
.
Passing a beast - looks like a cross between sheep and cattle - anyone know?
.
.
A bit cool for fishing this morning
.
.
What are all those people doing, Mummy?
..
.
Trying to keep warm?
.
.
Primroses are blooming
.
.
We pause at the Somerset Monument at Hawkesbury Upton
.
.
Then pass the pool
.
.
Gaining wide views over the Severn
.
.
Before descending to a sheltered place for
.
.
Our refreshment stop
.
.
Suitably fortified we continue downhill
.
.
To reach the ancient church in Hawkesbury
.
.
Where we are enthusiastically invited in to clean? - No, for a mini tour
.
.
The church has very early origins and you can spot many places where it has been altered
.
.
Good idea - increase your knowledge here - Did you know pattens were worn up to the early 20th century?
.
.
We are invited to inspect the Monk's Room
.
.
Situated above the porch
.
Complete with fireplace
.
.

 }
And ancient door hinges on display about 900 years old
.
.
Jacqui thanks the local people for a fascinating few minutes
.
.
Off we head into a cold North Wind
.
.
Passing some Anglo-Nubian Goats
.
.

Across Inglestone Common
.
.
Suddenly we round a corner and see this panorama - from Nibley on the left to Wotton - can you spot the Church tower?
.
.
A close up might help
.
.
We head back through Hillesley.

top As you can see, we thoroughly enjoy getting to know the South Cotswolds. We try to keep fit and succeed in having a good old chat. If you are interested in coming with us, see our walks programme and ring the leader if you have any questions about a particular walk. After two or three walks we hope you will then want to join the group as part of the national Ramblers' Association.
