Wysis Way Circular No 1 -
Monmouth to Highmeadow Woods

1 March 2008

See our plans
The Leisure Centre car park in Monmouth provides a good place to leave our cars for the first stage of the Wysis Way
.
.
We look up the River Wye as we cross the bridge out of Monmouth
.
.
Then climb the hill
.
.
Passing a pudding stone?
.
.
Towards Kymin
.
.
Where we have views back over Monmouth towards the Brecons
.
.
And we are able to explore the Naval Temple
.
.
Now cared for by the National Trust
.
.
We then walk down into the valley
.
.
Following the Wysis Way
.
.
Into Highmeadow Woods in the Forest of Dean
.
.
Until we reach Suck Stone
.
.
Where we stop for lunch, some taking shelter from the keen wind
.
.
Others happy to perch on the side of the hill
.
.
And the photographer eventually getting his sandwiches out
.
.
Before heading off through the forest
.
.
Meeting some other trail users
.
.
After about 5 miles on the Wysis Way
.
.
And shortly before leaving it, Mike sets up a group photograph
.
.
It works!
.
.

Then we walk down to the Wye crossing it by this rather dodgy looking bridge
.
.
Then pausing to read the information board at the Biblins
.
.
We then follow the Wye Valley Walk
.
.
As the river meanders towards Monmouth
.
.
Passing our first lambs of the year
.
.
With the fast flowing river on our left
.
.
Our path takes us through the churchyard past pretty Dixton church
.
.
Where we pause for a breather
.
.
Before the bridge over the Wye, our starting point, comes into view
.
.
See Stage 2 (Highmeadow Woods to Speculation) photos
.
.
.
Photos and captions thanks to Richard and Mike.

top As you can see, we thoroughly enjoy getting to know the South Cotswolds and beyond. We try to keep fit and succeed in having a good old chat. If you are interested in coming with us, see our walks programme and ring the leader if you have any questions about a particular walk. After two or three walks we hope you will then want to join the group as part of the national Ramblers' Association.
