Toadsmoor, Bisley and Chalford

19 January 2008
. .
Our leader Diana (in red) says hello to new member Janet, as she joins the band of stalwarts who have turned out on a day that promises to be very wet! Co-leader Richard is at home with the dreaded lurgy.
.
We set off up the valley
..
And soon are crossing muddy streams
.
And inspecting the water lying everywhere - but not yet falling from above as promised!
. .
Doesn't look a bit like the Cotswolds
.
Up we paddle to Bisley
.
A cheery sight by the churchyard
.
Patti cleans up at the wells
.
And Keith restores his boots to his usual meticulous standard (not for long though)
.
The locals look on in amazement
.
With a smaller party we have arrived at Bisley a bit earlier than planned, so we vote to go on to the next pub
.
Diana leads across the fields
.
Making a bee line for
.
The King's Head at Oakridge - sadly the food is off as the landlord is on two week's holiday
.
Nonplussed we buy a drink, eat our emergency rations, admire the floral displays and use the facilities
.
After lunch it decides to rain - only 15 minutes of light stuff - as we slither down towards Chalford
.
Wendy cannot resist the wash and brush up thoughtfully installed
.
From left to right, Brunel'e railway viaduct, the derelict canal (flowing today), the group, and the roaring River Frome
.
As we cross the road at the foot of Cowcombe, this water gushing up should be a warning
.
We paddle by the roundhouse - note the sandbags in place
.

And witness the canal overflowing through a garden into the river
.
J Arthur Rank presents ...
.
Some of us try not to get any wetter, without much success
.
And then it gets worse
.
The towpath is flooded
.
We decide to make for higher ground up Mutton Lane
.
And here we are back in Brimscombe, Diana having led a very successful solo expedition - with only 15 minutes of rain. Weather forecasts, who needs them!
.
.
Photos and captions from Mike, with camera in one hand, trekking pole in the other and map flapping around his neck as reserve navigator. Get well soon, Richard
.
top As you can see, we thoroughly enjoy getting to know the South Cotswolds. We try to keep fit and succeed in having a good old chat. If you are interested in coming with us, see our walks programme and ring the leader if you have any questions about a particular walk. After two or three walks we hope you will then want to join the group as part of the national Ramblers' Association.
