Marshfield and St Catherines Court

12 September 2007

..
Ray our leader welcomes everyone and spots a stranger -
.
Oh no it's not - it's Tony on annual leave doing a mid-week walk
.
Leaving Marshfield
.
And travelling South helped by the owl
.
And the curious cattle
.
Not to mention the alpacas
.
We make good progress and pause for a drink / banana - John is in fine form today!
.
An interesting building
.
We start to descend a steep slope
.
Which becomes almost precipitous
.
Of course we have to climb up again
..
We understand film star Jane Seymour is not in residence today
.
At the historic house
.
With its tithe barn, neither open to the public
.
Some have a rest, and Ray tells them the history
.
Whilst others inspect the church with its striking pulpit
.

And read about the gory end to St Catherine and why they named the Catherine Wheel after her - click the picture to enlarge
.
Captain William Blanchard, one of the former owners has this spectacular monument
.
Click the picture again to read the inscription - wonderful spellings!
.
Off we go again towards our lunch stop
.
More steep hills
.
John thinks them rather tame and roams on Open Access Land the even steeper way
.
Lunch is at Cold Ashton with its Court
.
And church
.
A short afternoon walk back to Marshfield
.
But not without its downs
.
And corresponding ups
.
Thanks Ray for a great workout! As you may detect he does plenty of walking wearing shorts! .

top As you can see, we thoroughly enjoy getting to know the South Cotswolds. We try to keep fit and succeed in having a good old chat. If you are interested in coming with us, see our walks programme and ring the leader if you have any questions about a particular walk. After two or three walks we hope you will then want to join the group as part of the national Ramblers' Association.
