Edge and Painswick

2 September 2007

..
Outside Edge Church. A silent A road to Gloucester behind us. The A46 is blocked by a landslide. Our leader, Brian, encouragingly clutching a map
.
We head off down the road
.
Eventually crossing a stile into fields
.
We steadily climb
.
Following a path running below Cud Hill
.
With views across to Painswick Beacon
.
As we leave the fields we look behind to see this sign which seems to suggest we have taken the wrong path
.
So we stop to examine our maps and discuss the position
.
Or look down the valley to Painswick
.
The footpath position unresolved the only option seems to be to stop for coffee
.
Before continuing towards the Beacon
.
We start to climb
.
Crossing the road below the Beacon
.
And reaching the foothills, photographer at the rear
.
At which point the cry goes out - let's have a photo of us climbing the hill from the front
.
I sprint to the front grabbing these two shots before requiring oxygen

.
Eventually we reach the summit - looks a bit windy
.

And pause to take in the views
.
Into the valley
.
And out over Gloucester
.
Then we head off along the side of the golf course
.
And down into Painswick
.
Past these old cottages
.
Must know a sailor to get a knot like that in her hair!
.
To our lunch break at Brian's
.
Disappointed that there is no Sunday roast we hungrily eye this fellow
.
But a plate of cream scones especially baked by Brian soon help us to relax in the afternoon sunshine
.
And admire the well tended garden
.
After lunch we head off down the valley
.
Passing houses which apparently keep more exotic pets
.
Our route taking us along the Painswick stream
.
Some dense undergrowth raising doubts over the wisdom of wearing shorts
.
Then a particularly muddy gateway
.
Calls for some fancy footwork
.
As we head on down the valley looking back at Painswick
.
A squeeze stile causes problems for some as John gives Brian a helping push
.
And is followed by an equally narrow stone stile
.
As we continue along the valley
.
Past more imposing stone houses
.
And a bridge over a stream
.
Crossing more fields
.
Disturbing the livestock
.
A pause for a drink
.
Before the next obstacle - Brian demonstrates the hard way to cross
.
We climb to the A46 closed by the landslide
.
Take once more to the fields with help under an electric fence
.
Pausing for a rest at the top of the hill above Pitchcombe
.
Looking back at Stroud
.
And down into the Painswick Valley
.
Before heading back
.
Over Edge Common to the cars
.

top As you can see, we thoroughly enjoy getting to know the South Cotswolds. We try to keep fit and succeed in having a good old chat. If you are interested in coming with us, see our walks programme and ring the leader if you have any questions about a particular walk. After two or three walks we hope you will then want to join the group as part of the national Ramblers' Association.
