Minchinhampton to Cherington Pond

18 August 2007

A favourite walk (based on No 9 in More Favourite Walks) led by Olivia, once again in deteriorating weather conditions this so-called "summer". Buy our book and do it on a sunny day - it's a superb 7.5mile walk!
..
Olivia ready to give an introductory talk
.
Alex and Carol have cleared the first stile
.
We head off across the fields
.
We went up and now we go down
.
We pass this attractive isolated house
.
We climb again leaving Minchinhampton
.
Heading towards Gatcombe.
Anne admires the "Long Stone"--it is said that if an infant is passed through the hole in the stone it would be cured of ricketts and smallpox
.
We form an orderly queue for a stile
.
Maurice negotialtes the stone stile
.
We bunch up to cross the golf course
.
We see golfers and one seems to be in the rough
.
Olivia waits for us to catch up
.
We negotiate this rather difficult stile and steep bank
.
Walking through the hamlet of "Nag's Head"
.
At Cherington Pond these stepping stones have been rearranged by the floods
.
Bernard having crossed decides to come back and have another go
.

Still some evidence of recent floods
.
Some paths are very overgrown
.
Still forcing our way through.
We pass by Aston Down with an old aircraft hanger visible across the cornfield
.
Nearing the end of the walk
.
Now raining heavily hence the blurred picture.
.

Photos and captions thanks to Bernard

top As you can see, we thoroughly enjoy getting to know the South Cotswolds. We try to keep fit and succeed in having a good old chat. If you are interested in coming with us, see our walks programme and ring the leader if you have any questions about a particular walk. After two or three walks we hope you will then want to join the group as part of the national Ramblers' Association.
