Charfield and Tortworth

21 July 2007

Two echos from history today, one about 80 years ago, and the other probably over 1,000 years!
..
In a layby near Tortworth we squeeze our cars between tractors and lorries for the start of Tim's walk
.
Our first port of call is the bridge at Charfield railway station where Tim tells us about the 1928 Charfield railway disaster
.
Before we move off passing this old mill
.
With a fast moving stream
.
Our route taking us mainly along roads due to flooded fields
.
Something wrong with this sign?
.
Coffee is taken by a very old tree
.
With a new sign to prove it
.
And an old sign to press home the fact
.
Then we head off
.
Past an old church
.
Wonder what they are laughing at!
.
Our lunch break - yes, it's a pub but Bernard has taken the pledge
.
We have some spectators watching use eat while they feed their noisy family
.
Then we gather outside
.
For Tim to start the afternoon proceedings
.
Which now take us across fields
.
Still a little bit soggy
.
Lots of nuts about this year
.

And fields of flowers
.
Edging round more water
.
Till we reach this church
.
With a slightly run down graveyard where Tim points out
.
A memorial to the Charfield rail disaster victims, itself becoming overgrown with weeds
.
An anathema to Ramblers, so we proceed to tidy it up
.
And now it looks much better
.
With a certain smug satisfaction we head off across the fields
.
To be faced by this frightening bunch
.
Who relieve the boredom of a Saturday afternoon by galloping round us
.
Before we leave their field, Mike showing how to get through this waterlogged gate
.
And Bernard following in his wake
.
While the rest of us wait patiently - perhaps smiling at the thought of one of them falling in
.
Then its back up Charfield Hill to the cars
.
.
.

top As you can see, we thoroughly enjoy getting to know the South Cotswolds. We try to keep fit and succeed in having a good old chat. If you are interested in coming with us, see our walks programme and ring the leader if you have any questions about a particular walk. After two or three walks we hope you will then want to join the group as part of the national Ramblers' Association.
