Painswick circle

18 July 2007

A complete circle of Painswick is our objective today
..
A good turn out at the walkers car park
.
Bernard outlines the walk
.
And introduces some ladies trying us out!
.
Off we go past luxuriant gardens
.
And pass Gyde House
.
And the almshouses
.
Bernard tells us the house used to be an orphanage for the village, originally just protestant boys. Read more
.
And V miles to lunch.
Heading out towards Painswick House
.
Some more colourful gardens
.
Around the corner
.
To get a (zoomed in) view of Painswick House
.
This section is a bit down ...
.
And up ...
.
We spot a buzzard flying and zoom in on it when it lands
.
Well camouflaged - can you spot it?
.
Down again
.
And up to a field where the public right of way is diagonally across the corner, but the waymark and notice ask you to go down the road
.
Following a permissive path around the edge rather than the public right of way
.

At the far end we note the waymark is pointing along the permissive path (where there is no right of way) rather than the public footpath diagonally across the crop
.
The path descends following a stream
.
We hastily don our rainwear for a sudden shower
.
And climb up
.
The sun comes out and we stop for a drink
.
And a chat
.
And a rest
.
Some interesting buildings
.
Not sure about the windows
.
Down we go
.
Through grasses tall
.
And short
.
Gone off camping?
.
Bigger ideas?
.
Amazing colours
.
A gentle downhill route
.
In the Washbrook valley
.
And down a steep slope
.
To cross a plank bridge into a garden
.
And out along the drive
.
To join the Cotswold Way at a familiar spot
.
Bernard has discovered that this stone lintel used to be the place where the mill race ran under the building when it was a water mill
.
Fascinating carvings
.
Downhill off the Cotswold Way
.
Along an overgrown path
.
Emerging on to the A46
.
Bernard gives us a chance to short cut back, and we wonder if the walk is longer than advertised. Later the technology proves that he is spot on at 5.5 miles. There have been a lot of stiles and 19 people queuing up makes the walk feel longer. (The red spot is our drink stop and we climb just under 900 feet today)
.
We pass Kings Mill
.
And the rushing mill race
.
And streamside properties
.
And along towards Stepping Stones Lane
.
A good view up to Painswick Church
.
And another
.
Bernard is looking for the next stile
.
We've found it!
.
We continue on
.
Past more gardens
.
And a couple of friends
.
To Brookhouse Mill
.
Where, after looking up the stream
.
And passing the post box
.
We climb steeply up into Painswick
.
And head up
.
Across the playing field
.
How do you play on this? Looks like an instrument of torture!
.
Don't let your eucalyptus grow this big or there could be trouble
.
We pass the old cattle pound and return to the car park by 1:15 pm after a very interesting and enjoyable walk

top As you can see, we thoroughly enjoy getting to know the South Cotswolds. We try to keep fit and succeed in having a good old chat. If you are interested in coming with us, see our walks programme and ring the leader if you have any questions about a particular walk. After two or three walks we hope you will then want to join the group as part of the national Ramblers' Association.
