Painswick Beacon and Cranham

4 July 2007

Mike and Heather lead a 6.5 mile strenuous walk on a morning that threatens rain, but never really does - until a few minutes after we finish!
.
The car park below Painswick Beacon. Mike seems happy
.
We head down to Paradise. Not any more - the pub's closed
.
Mike cuts a path for us with his secateurs
.
Brian, as usual, looking his best for the camera
.
We look across the small valley to Paradise House (zooming in)
.
As we descend towards Damsells Farm
.
Don't know what this is doing there
.
Tree planted by Anne Boleyn - scene also on front cover of "More Favourite Walks"
.
The imposing Damsells Farm
.
Waiting for a straggler to catch up as we head uphill
.
With this view back across the valley to Olivers? (unless you know differently ...)
.
And looking towards Painswick with its church spire and Frocester Hill far away on the skyline
.
Our path now takes us through the garden of Trench Hill House
.
As we pause for coffee looking across the valley to Jacks Green, Sheepscombe
.
Then continue into Lord's and Lady's Wood
.
Passing "Laurie Lee's" cricket field at Sheepscombe (bought for the village by the late Laurie Lee)
His poet friend Frank Mansell used to bowl his "fast furious ball like a shot from a cannon" - Cider with Rosie

.
Then walking through Workman's Wood
.
Where there has been an outbreak of Laminated Papyrus, a voracious, tree dwelling weed, from Egypt
.
We pause as we reach the Ebworth Estate
.
Looking back at the wood carving - Spirit of the Woods
.
Is this really the toilet we were told to expect when we reached Ebworth?
.
No there is a better one attached to the Estate Building
.
Maybe one day we will see these on Rodborough Common
.
As we leave Ebworth we look across the fields to the distant hills
.
Make sure you get our best side
.
As we head down through Overtown our backmarkers start to feel quite summery
.
Then we head up through the woods to Cranham Common
.
Once more looking down the valley across fields of wild flowers
.
Before stopping for lunch
.
We now head back down into the valley passing "Gladys' Leap"
.
Eventually pausing
.
For Mike to explain some problem footpaths
.
Before we head down the road to another infamous problem
.
We head back up the hill
.
Looking back and zooming in on Suttons Mill
.

Eventually passing the Royal William
.
We then head across the golf course
.
Looking down across the Severn Vale
.
To reach Painswick Beacon
.
Where Mike points out some features of the landscape
.
Including this area known locally as the spoon
.
We continue along the top of the Beacon
.
Spotting something in the distant sky. Could be Easy Jet's latest fleet of two seater passenger jets
.
No, it's the Red Arrows practicing for the Yeovilton Air Show
.
We leave the Beacon heading back for the cars
.
Passing this photographer who seems to have found something interesting
.
.
Thanks to Richard for the photos and captions, and links thanks to the Telegraph
.
top As you can see, we thoroughly enjoy getting to know the South Cotswolds. We try to keep fit and succeed in having a good old chat. If you are interested in coming with us, see our walks programme and ring the leader if you have any questions about a particular walk. After two or three walks we hope you will then want to join the group as part of the national Ramblers' Association.
