Miserden and beyond

30 June 2007

Miserden school car park,Weather prospects dire.
.
The leader still manages to smile
.
We set off through Misarden Park. Just enough rain for an umbrella
.
A Roman snail. Bit of wild garlic, a knob of butter, a medium oven...........
.
Coffee stop at Caudle Green
.
A quick group photo before we go
.
Down into the valley where sheep may safely, albeit somewhat damply, graze
.
Our path then takes us through this pretty garden
.
And up the hill to Syde
.
Looking back across the valley to Caudle Green as our back markers struggle up the hill
.
At Syde we look in the church
.
Then walk along the side of the valley still looking across at Caudle Green
.
Eventually we reach Winstone
.
And spot its Saxon church across the field
.
Two inquisitive horses follow our progress
.
Now heading down the valley to Duntisbourne Abbots
.
A pause for the leader to catch up
.
And we continue down the valley
.
Over a stile and into Duntisbourne Abbots where we stop for lunch
.
Before visiting the church with its unusual gate
.
In the heart of the village
.
Inside we see the alter
.
Stained glass windows
.
And impressive pillars
.
Then we continue on our way past this strange house
.
As we head across the top
.
Then down the hill, Alan cheerfully striding out
.
Dry enough now for Alex to put her umbrella away, although the wet seems to have shrunk her trousers
.
Now we are down in the Frome valley
.
Looking across to Bull Banks
.
And continuing downhill
.
Until our path is blocked by this tree, not a problem to our intrepid group as we force our way round it
.
To reach this new bridge over the Frome, replacing some rather treacherous stepping stones pointed out by Mike.
And which was built following pressure from our Group and which can obviously take considerable weight
.
A very impressive structure to be built out in remote countryside.
Click here to see the old stepping stones which the bridge replaces

.

There follows a steep climb through a field of frisky horses
.
Before we return to Miserden passing the church lych-gate
.
With the church rising behind a garden wall
.
Reaching the car park
.
Where, to finish the day off, Di models the latest fashion for trendy walkers
.
Thanks to Richard for the photos with the correct white balance setting tosuit the gloomy conditions and the captions, apt as ever
.
top As you can see, we thoroughly enjoy getting to know the South Cotswolds. We try to keep fit and succeed in having a good old chat. If you are interested in coming with us, see our walks programme and ring the leader if you have any questions about a particular walk. After two or three walks we hope you will then want to join the group as part of the national Ramblers' Association.
