Berkeley and Sharpness

5 June 2007

A 6 mile mid-week walk
.
You've got it wrong guys - this is the queue for bungee jumping
.
South Cots are meeting over there where Ray is ready to go
.
We head out of Berkeley getting a stoney look from these farmyard animals
.
Looking across the fields we see an old mill once part of the Berkeley estate
.
We head through the undergrowth
.
Along the Berkeley Pill
.
Following the Severn Way
.
And walk round a field with views of the power station in the background
.
Pausing as we approach the Severn
.
The Pill now having become a much wider tributary
.
A modern sculpture?
.
We head along the river with Sharpness in front
.
It's something to do with navigation
.
A modern sculpture by Damien Hirst
.
We were promised trains, boats and planes in the programme
.
Looking across to Lydney Docks we see some boats, where are the planes?
.
Ray admits this is the closest we are going to get
.
We check out the visitor information at Sharpness Docks
.
And notice a photo of the old railway bridge across the Severn before its demise in the 1960's
.
A boat is waiting for the tide
.
We sit down for our morning break
.
In the docks
.
Where picnic tables are provided
.
Now a boatyard - what was it originally?
.
More dock buildings
.
We leave Sharpness
.
Crossing a little used railway
.
Round a football pitch
.
In football its called packing the goalmouth!
.
If he knew what they were thinking he wouldn't be standing there
.
Ray looks back. Worried for the safety of his party
.
But we are soon safely across a stile
.
And heading up the hill
.
Through fields of buttercups
.
Till we pass this house which is next door to
.
The Lammastide Inn
.
We continue our way back
.
He has a certain elegance over stiles
.
Crossing a field where the farmer is rather busy
.
Same railway as before - this time the site of Berkeley Railway Station
.
But what's this? Signs that the railway is still in use
.
And they don't want anybody to get in
.
We carry quickly on
.
Pausing to look at
.
The views of this house and
.
Across the fields to Stinchcombe
.
Eventually we arrive back in Berkeley
.
Where a member invites us all into his camper van for cocktails before we adjourn to the pub
.

Thanks to Richard for most of the photos and tongue-in-cheek captions
.
top As you can see, we thoroughly enjoy getting to know the South Cotswolds. We try to keep fit and succeed in having a good old chat. If you are interested in coming with us, see our walks programme and ring the leader if you have any questions about a particular walk. After two or three walks we hope you will then want to join the group as part of the national Ramblers' Association.
