Painswick and Edge

12 April 2007

Angela and Patrick lead this weekday morning walk. Fine weather again!.
.
A familiar starting point - the walkers car park in Painswick
.
We set off up the road with views down the Painswick valley
.
Having been unable to do the walk over Patrick is back marker with Angela in the lead
.
As she takes us down the first footpath
.
With many spring flowers
.
Starting to show
.
As we walk down a muddy path
.
With more flowers
.
And a pause at the bottom
.
Then it's uphill
.
Richard backmarking?
.
Another pause to chat
.
And to admire the view
.
Before setting off again
.
An awkward stile producing some flamboyant crossing techniques
.
Rosemary and Diana stride out
.
We stop to watch a 150 year old, refurbished, metal fence being erected
.
Patrick gives a hand - this one will probably last five years
.
Then it's on along a wide track
.
More bluebells
.
And a final steep descent
.
Before we stop under a tree
.
Looking across the Severn Vale
.
For coffee
.
Off again we pass one of the many blossoming blackthorn bushes
.
Then we find this across our path - John considers having a ride
.
But leaves it to the young owner to show how it is done
.
An impressive farmhouse
.
At least one gentleman walking today as we cross a wobbly stile hampered by an overhanging roof
.
Mike demonstrates exactly how wobbly before replacing the parts!
.
Then we are greeted by this carpet of flowers
.
As we set of along the bottom of the hill
.
Past these old cottages
.
And some blossoming trees
.
To pick up the Cotswold Way
.
Which takes us steeply uphill
.
To Edge Common
.
Which we descend
.
With views over Painswick
.
After passing the Edgemoor Inn we descend
.
To continue on the Cotswold Way
.
First time I have photographed the other side of this stone
.
We carry on down into the valley
.
And across a very safe new bridge
.
To Washbrook Farm
.
With its old entrance
.
Then over the fields with Painswick church spire starting to appear
.
And with our ancient ramblers bringing up the rear
.
The church now clearly in sight
.

As we head into town
.
Past the bicycle tree
.
And an interesting milestone
.
Then looking across at Gyde House as we return to the cars

top As you can see, we thoroughly enjoy getting to know the South Cotswolds. We try to keep fit and succeed in having a good old chat. If you are interested in coming with us, see our walks programme and ring the leader if you have any questions about a particular walk. After two or three walks we hope you will then want to join the group as part of the national Ramblers' Association.
