Dursley to North Nibley

5 April 2007

A select few of us meet up for a moderate to hilly short day mid-week walk, lunching at the Black Horse at North Nibley. The weather is very promising.
.
We head out of the long stay car park in Dursley, Chris, our leader, setting a steady pace for the climbs to come
.
We pass the historic market place
.
And the old church having a facelift
.
A commotion behind us heralds the approach of a fire engine which turns into a side road
.
As we walk on past this unusual front garden
.
Then comes our first climb
.
And our first break to admire the view - or stare at the ground
.
Before descending the other side
.
Into Waterley Bottom
.
Then uphill again
.
Past a well established travellers' camp
.
The blossom is starting to look good
. .
As we move over to avoid some horses
.
Looking back at the travellers' site
.
And heading into the woods along the Cotswold Way
.
Now walking in bright sunshine again
.
As we come to the top of the hill looking down over the Severn Vale
.
And heading towards the Tyndale Monument
.
Feathers are in this year girls!
.
And a couple of us decide to climb the monument
.
Spotting this view from half way up
.
{short description of image}
Only 120 of these - Mike counted
.
Then looking down at our idle fellow walkers
.
Photo opportunities everywhere
.
The view over the vale
.
Towards the Severn
.
Over towards Stinchcombe Hill
.
And to North Nibley where our lunchtime destination stands out in the foreground
.
Zooming in once again
.
On the way out of the tower we stop to read its history
.
Before heading down the hill on the much improved Cotswold Way
.
Past an old tree with this complicated root system
.
Eventually stopping for lunch
.
At the Black Horse
.
Which we reluctantly leave under the watchful eye of the pub dog
.
Looking back from the village to the tower
.
Trying not to step on this butterfly basking in the afternoon sun
.
We take it quietly downhill after lunch
.
We cross a stream at the bottom of someone's garden
.
And pause for a look
.
Then continue on the Cotswold Way
.
Steadily uphill
.
Looking towards Stancombe
.
And Stancombe Court
.
Zooming in on Stancombe Court
.

A new bridge on the Cotswold Way - at least it makes life easier
.
And after spotting this plant nestling by the side of our path
.
We walk up through the woods
.
Before, you've guessed it, heading down into Dursley
.
Meeting more walkers, all well known to our Dursley members
.
Down into Dursley Centre, with Downham Hill on the skyline
.
Pausing at the new library - no need to worry about converging verticals here -before returning to the cars
.
