Painswick,Slad and Mr Lee

10 March 2007

Diana and Richard lead a walk to Slad. Trouble is the pub is being refurbished so no pub grub available. Di has an idea and the word gets round - about 27 turn up!
.
We leave Painswick on the Cotswold Way, our numbers swelled by the promise of Di's cakes
.
Heading down into the valley
.
Still following the Cotswold Way
.
With the sun breaking through
.
We press on across this bridge
.
Past a well known landmark - good job we are not going to Bath today
.
And with Di in the lead a pause at the top for the rest of us to catch up
.
We look back across to Painswick
.
Before passing these tiny lambs in the field with their mothers
. .
Then down in the valley we spot this relic of times gone by
.
A stile which nearly catches some of us out
.
As we look back at Edge Church
.
Before another bridge
.
Brings us to coffee and time to polish off Di's cakes
.
There were just enough to go round - the ones at the back as we head off up hill had the rock cakes!
.
More views of Painswick with the new housing development to the left
.
And Carol vaults another stile
.
As we continue uphill
.
Wishing we could have got the gate open
.
As Norman waits impatiently
.
The hill continues
.
But we reach the top narrowly beating a dog and a horse
.
Pity we didn't have this a couple of weeks ago when the walk was snowed off!
.
We head down the hill
.
Steep in places
.
Into the Slad Valley
.
Looking up to the village
.
With the sun breaking through again
.
And the Woolpack tempting some
.
While others visit Laurie Lee's grave
.
In the churchyard opposite
.
And see the house in which he spent his childhood
.
Another break at the War Memorial
.
With views back up the Slad Valley
.
Before we head up hill
.
And over into the Painswick Valley past this unusual house
.
Relaxing now with our destination in sight
.
On the hill opposite
.
But first we must make our way to the valley bottom
.
Then up into Painswick where thought is given to putting one of the joint leaders in the stocks
.
We pass the church with some of its famous yew trees
.
And a quaint door
.

Before heading back up through the town to complete our walk
.

top As you can see, we thoroughly enjoy getting to know the South Cotswolds. We try to keep fit and succeed in having a good old chat. If you are interested in coming with us, see our walks programme and ring the leader if you have any questions about a particular walk. After two or three walks we hope you will then want to join the group as part of the national Ramblers' Association.
