Stroud Heritage: Natural and Man-Made

17 February 2007

Richard takes the photos today and says that it makes a change for him to take the urban landscape.
..
Tim addresses us in the car park at Cainscross
.
And we wait at the lights to cross the road
.
We pass the old Cainscross & Ebley Co-op building telling us that "Self help commands respect"
.
To "labour and wait" and that "unity is strength"
.
Then its down to the canal where Tim tells us about the work to be done before reopening.
.
We stop for more information from Tim with Ebley Mill in the background, the River Frome on the left and the canal on the right
.
And move on passing under a new bridge connecting new homes and eventually Ebley Mill
.
Must get one of those for the kitchen at home
.
Across the canal is the old Ebley Childrens Home Read More (2 pages).
.
Then we spot the imposing entrance to Snow Business (visit their website)
.
And stop to read the inscription on the modern sculpture just inside the gate
.
We cross the river Frome by an old bridge and head along the cycle path
.
To the site of the old Dudbridge Railway Station Read about the railway .
.
Another bridge to cross as we head towards Lightpill
.
Then along the cycle track
.
Heading towards Stroud
.
We walk down the Bath Road
.
Then follow the River Frome
.
To Brunel's railway arches - funny how we like standing on bridges
.
First sign of Spring?
.
Tim points out an item of interest in a book which he is carrying
.
While other items of interest are removed from rucksacks
.
As we take our coffee break
.
Another item of interest rushes by
.
Then its up through Rodborough
.
Crossing the road just below the Fort
.
Second sign of Spring?
.
And along the edge of the Common
.
To the top of Bowl Hill
.
And a stop in Kingscourt
.
For Tim to tell disbelievers that he did go to school
.
Then its down into the valley passing the old piano works
.
And along the cycle track
.
To the roundabout at Sainsburys
.
We cross the road to the old Redlers factory
.
Opened in 1910 by the Countess Bathurst
.
And cross the canal again
.
Into Cainscross where we spot what must be a Rambler's house
.
And outside the derelict Tricorn House a sign advising us to "behold now is the accepted time"
.
Before returning to the car park which is also home to this fish stall
.
.

top As you can see, we thoroughly enjoy getting to know the South Cotswolds. We try to keep fit and succeed in having a good old chat. If you are interested in coming with us, see our walks programme and ring the leader if you have any questions about a particular walk. After two or three walks we hope you will then want to join the group as part of the national Ramblers' Association.
