Painswick Beacon and Coopers Hill

30 January 2007

Bernard promises views from the hills today.
..
Everybody listens attentively to Bernard as we meet in a car park at the bottom of Painswick Beacon
.
And we set off across the golf course to the beacon
.
Strung out already, Bernard's setting a good pace
.
We stop at the trig point to admire the view while the old and infirm make use of it to lean on
.
Then it's along the Cotswold Way
.
Through Buckholt Woods
.
Coping with a slippery slope on the Cotswold Way
.
Then up towards Coopers Hill
.
What a view. Don't do it Bernard!
.
We stop to look down the cheese rolling slope
.
Resulting in jocular speculation for some
.
While others need to lie down
.
Once down the bottom we look up and ponder on the lunacy of running down here after a cheese! It's much steeper than the photo - over 45 degrees and very bumpy!
.
We continue on our way
.
Down the road
.
Into the valley with Churchdown Hill in front of us
.
Crossing a stream
.
Passing a mistletoe tree - always plenty around except when its being sold in the shops at Christmas
.
Did you know there is a UK Mistletoe Information Gateway? All you ever wanted to know about mistletoe around the world. Did you know it is the only native British plant with white berries? All this and more ...
.
And a familiar clock which always seems to show the same time
.
Before heading across the fields
.
Below Prinknash Abbey
.
And over a stile? bridge? speak your weight machine??
.
A pretty thatched cottage
.
Can spring be far away?
.
Snowdrops also abundant this year
.
As are winter aconites
.
We then climb the hill
.
Back to the cars
.
With flowers here and there to take your mind off the ascent
.
.

top As you can see, we thoroughly enjoy getting to know the South Cotswolds. We try to keep fit and succeed in having a good old chat. If you are interested in coming with us, see our walks programme and ring the leader if you have any questions about a particular walk. After two or three walks we hope you will then want to join the group as part of the national Ramblers' Association.
