Salterley Saunter

23 January 2007

A good turnout - 16 I think - and lovely weather for walking, writes Richard
..
On a cold frosty morning views from the visitors centre at Crickley Hill are magnificent
.
As we pay attention to a quick briefing from our leader, Patrick
.
Before setting off along the top of the hill
.
Looking down towards Gloucester and May Hill
.
We enter the woods along the Cotswold Way
.
Well you would be frozen stiff if you had been up all night
.
We walk up the track, past Salterley in the trees
.
And at the top of the hill Patrick pauses to explain the route
.
Followed by a break in the morning sunshine
.
Another pause for backmarkers to catch up
.
And to inspect a small pumping station in the woods
.
Then it's down a track and through a gate
.
Where our chairman demonstrates the correct way to close a gate
.
We continue along the valley
.
Then up and across fields
.
To a stile where we encounter this garden gnome
.
A pause at the war memorial in Coberley
.
Where the sun dial tells us the time - an hour slow according to Jim
.
Then down past this attractive garden
.
Someone here has got an identity problem!
.
Discussion topic - "A chairman's lot is not a happy one, happy one."
.
Then a gentle climb back up a valley
.
Followed by a steeper climb
.
Same climb - taken from the front - photographer ran all the way
.
We pass the Air Balloon. We'll be back
.
And over the roundabout, lorries thundering past
.
Then back through the woods
.
To the cars at Crickley Hill before returning to the Air Balloon for lunch
.
Thanks to Richard once again for the photos and captions
.

top As you can see, we thoroughly enjoy getting to know the South Cotswolds. We try to keep fit and succeed in having a good old chat. If you are interested in coming with us, see our walks programme and ring the leader if you have any questions about a particular walk. After two or three walks we hope you will then want to join the group as part of the national Ramblers' Association.
