Shipton Moyne and Tetbury

23 December 2006

Olivia's Christmas walk is 5 miles long
..
And some of us dress up accordingly
.
Before setting off up the road
.
Passing a newly built (2004) house
.
And the spendid gateway into Estcourt Park
.
We turn across the fields, where Olivia sets a good pace until
.
The going becomes soggy
.
Spreading out to negotiate a slippery bank
.
Then Olivia shows us how to negotiate a stream and
.
We follow on behind
.
The stream is quite swollen
.
Olivia holds the gate
.
As we clamber up the tricky bank
.
And we soon reach the outskirts of Tetbury
.
Is that the church?
.
We catch sight of the ghostly church tower through the mist
.
Much more colourful are the selection of Christmas wreathes on the doors!
.
Note the fairy lights
.
Interesting reflections
.
A colourful winter garden
.
Is there a competition? If so there are plenty of entries!
.
In the churchyard we find a beautiful variegated holly tree
.
An interesting monument
.
And a lamp lighter ! ? ! Perhaps not
.
Before taking a coffee break
.
Afterwards we note an interesting window with
.
A brave couple sticking to plan A
.
Meanwhile back at the wreathes
.
A colourful plant
.
Then on the way out of Tetbury a trendy sunglass wearer
.
And a turbulent stream
.
The weather gets no better
.
Another view of the ghostly church tower
.
We discover more colour on this grey day
.
We pause to negotiate a tricky stile
.
We tell Jim that this was the hard way down
.
Then we continue down the valley, following the stream
.
Into Estcourt Park
.
Passing the Manor House
.
And outbuildings
.
Nice car port
.
Real horsey country
.
We negotiate another tricky stile
.
Then find this somewhat lazy horse
.
At least this one wants to make friends
.
Even with Richard
.
Caroline has the knack
.
Shipton Moyne church comes into view
.
Then we find this somewhat unusual house
.
And a fearsome statue
.
Past the church
.
Pause for thought
.
Before reaching our goal, where everyone stops for a very pleasant lunch at the Cat and Custard Pot.
.
Lots of photos on this unpromising day from Richard and Mike
.

top As you can see, we thoroughly enjoy getting to know the South Cotswolds. We try to keep fit and succeed in having a good old chat. If you are interested in coming with us, see our walks programme and ring the leader if you have any questions about a particular walk. After two or three walks we hope you will then want to join the group as part of the national Ramblers' Association.
