The Three Ampneys

13 December 2006

John leads a mid week morning walk around three charming villages - and finds a little mud here and there
.
Meeting at the Crown at Crucis, John, our leader, strikes a nonchalant pose
.
And we head off through the village of Ampney Crucis
.
Pausing to look at the church
.
Then down an avenue of trees
.
And across fields, passing the lonesome pine
.
And collecting a considerable amount of mud on our boots
.
To the far end of Ampney Crucis
.
A pause to find our way across some fields
.
Eventually finding a hidden stile
.
Before heading along a muddy path
.
Who was that masked horse?
.
Some very damp fields
.
While some of us negotiate the stile the others study the ground
.
Before crossing the fields to
.
Ampney St Mary and an old barn where we study the Parish Notices
.
Some deep conversations taking place here
.
Then a long wide track
.
Takes us to Ampney St Peter, its church
.
And pretty cottages
.
Then down a narrow alley
.
Spotting these two with a field to themselves
.
And a recently constructed pile of stones - maybe as mysterious as Stonehenge in a thousand years time
.
Returning to Ampney Crucis we pass the village sheep
.
Then cross the river back to the cars
.
Thanks to Richard for the photos and captions.

top As you can see, we thoroughly enjoy getting to know the South Cotswolds. We try to keep fit and succeed in having a good old chat. If you are interested in coming with us, see our walks programme and ring the leader if you have any questions about a particular walk. After two or three walks we hope you will then want to join the group as part of the national Ramblers' Association.
