Miserden adventure

25 November 2006

Richard, our leader for the day, writes, "Yes we survived the walk on Saturday. My thanks to the hardy souls who ignored the weather forecast and braved the elements. Not a bad day in the end and there were eight of us for what turned out to be a fairly eventful walk."
.
We leave Miserden and head towards Sudgrove stopping to talk to these two curious observers
.
Before heading up the valley
.
And looking back to Sudgrove and Pat Smythe's house
.
Pausing for breath as we enter the woods
.
Over a newly repaired stile
.
Then crossing the fields towards Battlescombe
.
A testing bank to climb down
.
Past a tree covered in berries - don't mention a hard winter
.
And a pause for coffee and a banana
.
Looking back up the valley towards Througham
.
Now our path has become a stream
.
And up the hill heading towards Edgeworth
.
Here we join a shoot who offer us £20 for a days beating - nearly a couple of takers
.
But we prefer to head for Edgeworth Church and lunch
.
After lunch a quick look inside the church and here we must apologize and make a confession
.
As one of our number is tempted to raise the corner
.
Of a beautiful floor tapestry which is, it seems, wired to the alarm system
.
We creep out, the bell still ringing in our ears, and head down the valley
.
Pausing to look back up the hill for signs of a pursuing host of avenging angels
.
We hurriedly skirt flooded roads
.
Ignoring the accusing look of a local killer sheep
.
And head up the Frome valley
.
Where we encounter our second difficult water crossing, testing the waterproof properties of our boots
.
The umbrella was here last time we were in the area - left by a rambler who could not stand the ridicule of carrying one
.
Another slight undulation
.
With views back across Bull Banks
.
Which we proceed to climb
.
Finally up steep steps through the woods at the top
.
We now take a level path in the afternoon sun towards Winstone
.
Then back down through Miserden Park
.
Before the familiar climb to the village
.
With views back down the valley
.
Watched by a hungry predator
.
Before entering Miserden, agreeing that we have been on more of an adventure than a ramble
.
Pictures and captions from Richard. He writes, "The photos with me on were taken by Di with my camera and under my expert guidance".

top As you can see, we thoroughly enjoy getting to know the South Cotswolds. We try to keep fit and succeed in having a good old chat. If you are interested in coming with us, see our walks programme and ring the leader if you have any questions about a particular walk. After two or three walks we hope you will then want to join the group as part of the national Ramblers' Association.
