Whaddon and upwards

23 September 2006

Only six on Bernard's walk - not a surprise given the other activities going on over the weekend. Still we had a really good time and we all agreed at the end that it was the longest 10 mile walk we had ever done!
.
We meet in the layby at Whaddon where Bernard, our leader lays out his stock of walk books, making a couple of quick sales
.
Then we set off through Pound Farm Nurseries
.
A glance back to where we left the cars
.
Then ahead with views over Robinswood Hill
.
Across fields where the inhabitants choose to ignore us
.
Although this one seemed rather keen to join in
.
We were slightly bemused when, unable to open this gate, we climbed over only to find this sign!
.
We cross the M5
.
Then pick up the Wysis Way which joins Offas Dyke, near Monmouth, to the Thames
.
Possibly our last chance to pick blackberries this year
.
And we start climbing
.
Looking back across the valley
.
Then the final stretch up Cud Hill
.
And the Blow Familly memorial
.
The most recent stone
.
Looking north towards Cheltenham
.
They are still building the wall
.
We start the climb up Painswick Beacon
.
Looking across the Severn Valley
.
Some take the steep way up the Beacon
.
We pause at the top to admire the view
.
And after lunching on the golf course (ninth tee) we head off through the woods
.
Towards Coopers Hill
.
We stand at the top and imagine chasing a cheese down its precipitous slope
.
Then look up from the bottom
.
Before heading off down the valley
.
Followed by a herd of ferocious bovines (can I use this as a noun?)
.
Sign above the milking parlour
.
A rather magnificant old farm building
.
We walk through a field occupied by an Exmoor pony and her foal
.
Past a candidate for a chocolate box cover
.
Before re crossing the motorway
.
Bernard leading us back to the cars

top As you can see, we thoroughly enjoy getting to know the South Cotswolds. We try to keep fit and succeed in having a good old chat. If you are interested in coming with us, see our walks programme and ring the leader if you have any questions about a particular walk. After two or three walks we hope you will then want to join the group as part of the national Ramblers' Association.
