Coates and Sapperton -

24 May 2006

John is amazed to see a good turn out in the continuing "monsoon" season! But it's no surprise to the walkers, as he has put on a very interesting walk, "A walk back in time along part of the Thames & Severn Canal"
.
We meet in the car park of the Tunnel Inn
.
Where John explains the history of the Inn
.
With old photos as an excellent visual aid. Here we learn that the Inn used to be three storeys high before a fire and subsequent rebuilding
.
We look over the top of the Coates portal
.
Where we view the canal as it exits the two and a quarter mile long tunnel
.
Then, after stopping to discuss the weather with a local
.
We set off through the woods, roughly following the line of the canal as it passes through the tunnel
.
The weather looks a bit better
.
At the moment
.

At least the footpath is easy to follow!
.
Entering Sapperton with more storm clouds brewing
.
Where we pass the Bell
.
Then down to the Daneway Portal
.
Where John, our leader, shows us some more old photos of the area
.
We walk down the Sapperton Valley
.
Alongside the canal
.
Things get a bit muddy
.
Then up through the woods back to Sapperton to follow our outward route back to the cars
.

top As you can see, we thoroughly enjoy getting to know the South Cotswolds. We try to keep fit and succeed in having a good old chat. If you are interested in coming with us, see our walks programme and ring the leader if you have any questions about a particular walk. After two or three walks we hope you will then want to join the group as part of the national Ramblers' Association.
