May Hill at bluebell time -

6 May 2006

20 make the trip through Gloucester and out to the edge of the Forest of Dean to climb May Hill, nearly 1,000 feet high, and a landmark for miles around.
We meet in a layby in Longhope where Mike gives some information on the walk
.

And set off
.
We pass a lorry depot which has divine facilities for washing lorries
.
And head down the road to open fields
.
Smile for the camera
.
And the first of many stiles
.
And a footbridge
.
Our first climb
.
With views down the valley
.
Walking past a new cut and laid hedge
.
And many cowslips
.
Will you be my friend?
.
How about us?
.
A further climb through gorse bushes
.
Anne is enjoying the climb
.
Our morning break.
.
Mike explains where we have been
.
As we look down into the valley. The river Severn is visible in the background
.
A prospective rambler? No too well dressed!
.
Down to Huntley past our first bluebells
.
Turn left at the church and up
.
Through bluebell woods
.
With some fine displays
.
Past a dodgy looking landing stage
.
And some noisy residents
.
Then ever upwards
.
To the top of May Hill with their famous clump of "99 trees" (The devil didn't allow any more!)
.
With views of the Brecons
.
And a sheltered spot for lunch
.
More friends on the way down
.
Very friendly in fact
.
Unlike these two
.
We were only playing!
.
A quick boot clean before heading for the cars
.

top As you can see, we thoroughly enjoy getting to know the area. We try to keep fit and succeed in having a good old chat. If you are interested in coming with us, see our walks programme and ring the leader if you have any questions about a particular walk. After two or three walks we hope you will then want to join the group as part of the national Ramblers' Association.
