Slimbridge -
13 September 2005
A 5 mile mid-week level walk from Gossington Bridge to Slimbridge village. Pictures from John and Mike.
Our leader Bernard briefs us on the walk ahead - a very attentive audience!
An almost impossible high stile, with Bernard holding the tree branch back out of the way!
A cleared path through the maize - well done that farmer!
Not so good here - watch out for nettles.
Quick bit of pruning to tidy up.
A single allotment in the corner of a pasture - looks very productive.
Approaching St John's Church at Slimbridge.
An imposing tower...
... and a fine13th century Early Gothic interior.
A relatively new addition (1994) is the "Sir Peter Scott Memorial Window". The design is based on Psalm 104, which was read by the Duke of Edinburgh at Peter Scott's (the founder of Slimbridge and the Wildfowl Trust) memorial service in St Paul's Cathedral.
On the left is the creation, in terms of earth, air and water. In the centre a river valley (the Severn) "by which the fowls of the air have their habitation". On the right the subject is night "wherein the beasts of the forest do creep forth" (including a fox). Well worth a visit to study the window as the photo hardly does it justice.
Ready to go again ...
...to battle through some more maize and return to the start point via a much shorter route. A machete is always a good thing to bring on Bernard's walks!
