Chalford Hill and Daneway -
19 December 2004
 This walk was billed as an after dinner walk out - see photo left, although only a few diners turn up on this glorious winter morning. The others miss a treat!
Jacky introduces us to her friend up on Chalford Hill!
The sun is extremely bright and low in the sky, and there is a cutting wind on the hill tops, so we start off briskly.
A study in concentration.
Down we go ...
... towards the canal ...
... which we then follow all the way to the Daneway portal of the Sapperton tunnel ...
... before returning for a pleasant lunch at the Daneway Inn.
Lovely winter sun through Siccaridge Wood.
Is Jacky lost? A historic photo of Jacky consulting a map - the first time ever we are led to believe!
It looks serious!
No, all is well. A good humoured wind-up after all.
We head towards Oakridge Lynch and later France Lynch, debating the origin of the word "lynch". Perhaps they strung someone up, but it seems most likely that the lynch derives from its meaning as a cultivated terrace following the contours of a hill - of which there are many in the area.
Beautiful afternoon light.
We call a donkey across his paddock to see us, and Joe recites the poem below from memory. We are suitably impressed, although some of us do not agree with its sentiments.

The Donkey by G.K.Chesterton
When fishes flew and forests walked
And figs grew upon thorn,
Some moment when the moon was blood
Then surely I was born.

With monstrous head and sickening cry
And ears like errant wings,
The devil's walking parody
On all four-footed things.

The tattered outlaw of the earth,
Of ancient crooked will;
Starve, scourge, deride me: I am dumb,
I keep my secret still.

Fools! For I also had my hour;
One far fierce hour and sweet:
There was a shout about my ears,
And palms before my feet.
His mate must already know this poem, and does not want to hear it yet again.
Last hill of the day, as we look over the Golden Valley to Frampton Mansell. We are all very grateful to Jacky, one of our team of volunteers leaders, for another excellent trip out into the glorious Cotswold countryside.
If you are interested in trying out one of our walks, just turn up on the day, or why not give the leader a ring to check its suitability for you. See our latest programme here.
