Newnham-on-Severn and Soudley -
9 October 2004
Mike and Heather take us on a Forest and River Exploration.
First we climb up through the attractive riverside settlement of |Newnham-on-Severn.
We cross peaceful meadows with ancient trees...
... and start our climb up into the Forest of Dean.
Getting warmer now.
The Severn comes into view.
We reach Blaize Bailey viewpoint, and look out over the horseshoe bend to our part of Gloucestershire.
A very convenient place for a coffee stop.
One last look before we head down through the forest to ...
... the peace of Soudley Ponds.
We have our lunch at the Dean Heritage Museum, and spot two friendly dogs waiting patiently for their owner to return.
After lunch we climb up slowly and then enjoy a steady downhill walk ...
... through the meadows.
Eventually we reach the fascinating mini harbour at Bullo Pill.
We head back to Newnham, thinking that it must be a level walk now ...
... but still have one hill to climb, up into the Churchyard at Newnham.
However, we do get good views of the Passage Inn at Arlingham...
... and beyond the sweep of the river is Cam Long Down. The rain clouds gather, but we have had a great day out in the sunshine!
