Sharpness and Purton -
29 May 2004
A dismal day to start with, but the forecast promises an improvement. We leave Sharpness and climb gently through farmland past Brookend.
Dave and Margaret are our leaders in this little walked part of the district.
The minor climb has been worth it, as we now start to obtain wide views over the Severn, and over the Cotswold Hills.
Dave (left) points out the landmarks.
We have a drink stop at Purton as a cruiser passes us on the Gloucester - Sharpness canal. The weather brightens up considerably.
Some visit the church, while others rest on the bench. Just as we are due to go ....
... a family bring their model boats ready to launch.
Boat number two appears, and eventually ...
... there are three! After the first two are launched, our leader insists we get on with the walk!
Lovely scenery - why don't we walk here more frequently, we ask ourselves? Why not indeed!
We pass many old wrecks on the bank of the Severn.
Here we pose by one of the towers of the old railway bridge, demolished after one of the supports was destroyed after a boat crashed into it in the early 1960's.
A view towards the old docks, and you might just spot a few boat masts.
A peaceful view up river.
We leave the riverside, with views of Berkeley Nuclear Power Station, and further down river you can just see the two Severn Bridges. A pub lunch awaits many of us!
