A walk in the Black Mountains - July 2003
We parked in the Mynydd Du Forest in the heart of the Black Mountains in South Wales, two hours drive from Stroud.
Soon we saw the looming hulk of the Grwyne Fawr Reservoir dam.
Eddie, on the right, was our leader for the day walk. We were hoping for some sunshine, but it never quite arrived. However it was a good temperature for a day's walking and the views were pretty clear.
We first had a steep ascent to the top and then spent most of the day undulating gently. The Sugar Loaf mountain is to be seen on the left.
Here Eddie leads us to a cairn near the Blacksmith's Anvil. We looked east and spotted May Hill and the River Severn about 30 or 40 miles away.
Our first rest stop.
Welsh ponies on the hillside above the dam.
Eddie choosing a sheltered lunch stop place with magnificent views North West.
Uphill after lunch, but not for long. Views to the Brecon Beacons now.
Eddie points out the landmarks from the 713 metre Trig Point on Rhos Dirion.
The group photo. We had a most enjoyable day out in the mountains.
